Santander bring fraud messages to young adults supported by Barnardo's in Bradford

Santander UK brought a fresh approach to fighting fraud to a workshop at Barnardo鈥檚 Employment, Training and Skills Service (ETS) specifically targeted at young adults from Bradford who are supported by the children鈥檚 charity.

Earlier this year, Santander teamed up with听Kurupt听FM from BAFTA-winning BBC TV show听People Just Do Nothing听to create its latest fraud awareness campaign, 鈥楳C Grindah鈥檚 Deadliest Dupes鈥. The workshops with Barnardo鈥檚 are built around the content and messages of the campaign鈥檚 three short films focusing on:听;听听补苍诲听.

Stats show that Gen Z are among the most likely to fall victim to scams, and their behaviours online can make them vulnerable to fraudsters. Industry data shows that in the last year, ID theft among people under 21 has risen by 26%1听while 50% of money mules are aged 26 or under and 27% are aged 21 or under1.

Meanwhile Santander鈥檚 own research shows that those aged under 25 are three times more likely to act on an instruction in scam correspondence2, 85% have shared details on Instagram that could leave them open to ID theft3听and a quarter have entered personal details on a website using unsecure WiFi4.

The event in Bradford was attended by 50 young people, many of whom had previously been targeted by scammers. They watched the campaign videos which prompted discussions around fraud awareness. A representative from the local Santander branch also attended and gave the young people some top tips to keep themselves safe online.

Abraham, 18, who is supported by the ETS service in Bradford, said:听鈥淚 found the workshop really useful. I learned a lot about how not to get scammed, about fake websites and why it鈥檚 important that the Wi-Fi is secure. It was interesting and helpful.鈥

Richard Ackroyd, Branch Director from Santander in Bradford said:鈥淭hese workshops are a great way for us to reach young people with scam avoidance messages that could make a real difference to their lives. Deadliest Dupes was created to deliver serious messages in a fun and engaging way for this difficult to reach age group. We are delighted that we are able to work with Barnardo鈥檚 to extend this campaign to the young adults they support.鈥

Barnardo鈥檚 Chief Executive, Javed Khan said:听鈥淲e鈥檙e pleased Santander is helping to protect vulnerable young people supported by Barnardo鈥檚 against fraud.

鈥淚t鈥檚 vital that all young people are armed with the knowledge they need to stay safe from scams, so we look forward to building on the success of the Deadliest Dupes campaign.鈥
